"The Prison" Literary Essay

"The Prison", a story written by Bernard Malamud, is an interesting story about a man that had a prisoner life because he had stolen in the past. This writing will be analysed by this essay because of its themes that are: "Life as a Prison" and "Hope for a Change". The first Theme, that is "Life as a prison" refers to the way that Tommy has to livein the candystore in a boring long routine for ever. Also he has to be married with a disgusting woman called Rosa that he does not love. "Working from eight in the morning to almost midnight everyday" Talking about the other theme, "Hope for a change" we can say thet it represents the way in how Tommy cganges his personality throughout the story. "Whit a curse he tore her away from the girl, whose sickly face showed the depth of her fright. 'Whatsamatter' he showted at Rosa, 'you want her blood?'" This quotation shows how Tommy saves the little girl from Rosa being a good man when in the past he stole something. Here we can see a big change in his personality. "Hope for a Change" and "Life as a Prison were the two themes analysed that makes you reflect about your choices. In conclusion this is a good book for reflecting and in my opinion, I would think things twice.
